About Wrocław

UniwersytetOdOdryWrocław is the largest city in western Poland. It is situated on the River Oder in the Silesian Lowlands of Central Europe, roughly 350 kilometres from the Baltic Sea to the south and 100 kilometres from the Sudeten Mountains to the north. Wrocław is the historical capital of Lower Silesia.

At various times in history, it has been part of the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, the Austrian Empire, Prussia, and Germany. It became part of Poland in 1945, as a result of the border changes after the Second World War.

The population of Wrocław is about 630 000, making it the fourth largest city in Poland.

Wrocław has been classified as a global city by GaWC research group, with the ranking of high sufficiency and living standards. Wrocław was among 230 cities in the world in the ranking of the consulting company Mercer’s ”Best City to Live” in 2015. Moreover, Wrocław is the only Polish city to be named in the top ten places to visit in the ranking of the British newspaper, The Guardian.

nr 4In 2016, the city will become the European Capital of Culture and the World Book Capital. Also, Wrocław will host the Theatre Olympics, World Bridge Games and the European Film Awards in 2016 as well as the World Games in 2017.

Centennial Hall [2] is one of the most interesting buildings in Wrocław which belongs to UNESCO. A lot of mass events are organized there during the summer holidays.

Another very interesting place is the botanical garden [3] which is located closely to the Faculty of Biotechnology where the conference will take place.  You can go there for a walk or to have some rest.

It is interesting  to visit Ostrów Tumski [4], which is located by the Odra river. It’s a magical place with lots of unforgettable views and it’s really close to the conference venues.

We also recommend the panorama of the Battle of Racławice [5]. It’s a large painting that will impress you.
